Standing seam metal roof installed by RoofX, Tampa Bay & Greater Orlando

Why It Works

Metal for Florida homes.

  • Wind performance

Properly installed standing seam can handle 140–180mph winds.

  • Lifespan

40–70 years (vs 18–22 for asphalt).

  • Heat reflection

Modern metal coatings reflect 70%+ of solar radiation, dramatically reducing attic heat gain.

  • Insurance discounts

Many Florida insurers offer reduced premiums for metal roofs.

  • Resale value

Metal roofing increases home value more than equivalent asphalt.

Types We Install

Metal options.

  • Standing seam

Premium architectural metal. Vertical seams between panels eliminate exposed fasteners. 40–70 year lifespan.

  • Metal shingles

Stone-coated steel or aluminum that mimics traditional shingle, shake, or tile appearance. 40–50 year lifespan.

  • Exposed fastener (R-panel/5V)

Cost-effective metal option. Visible screws (with neoprene washers). 30–40 year lifespan.

  • Aluminum / Steel / Copper

Material choice depends on environment. Coastal salt = aluminum; inland = steel; premium architectural = copper.

Florida Considerations

What Florida does to metal.

  • Coastal salt-air

Within 5 miles of saltwater, aluminum or zinc-coated steel is recommended.

  • Hurricane wind

Standing seam systems are among the most wind-resistant residential systems available.

  • Energy savings

Reflective coatings notably reduce summer attic temps and AC load.

Cost

What does metal cost in Tampa Bay & Greater Orlando?

$10–$20 per sq ft installed depending on system, panel gauge, and roof complexity. Metal costs 2–3x asphalt upfront but is competitive over 40 years (one metal life vs ~2 asphalt cycles).

Standing seam metal roofing

Standing seam is the premier residential metal roofing system. The panels lock together with vertical raised seams that hide all fasteners under the panels above, eliminating the exposed-screw failure mode that plagues lower-tier metal systems. Standing seam panels are typically 16 to 24 inches wide and run continuously from ridge to eave, so a properly installed standing seam roof has no horizontal seams across the field.

RoofX installs standing seam metal in steel (G90 galvanized, painted finish), aluminum (recommended within 5 miles of saltwater for coastal Tampa Bay homes), and copper (premium architectural). Wind ratings on standing seam regularly exceed 150 to 180 mph properly installed. Lifespan in Florida is 40 to 70 years depending on substrate and coating. Standing seam typically qualifies for the largest insurance premium discounts available on Florida policies.

Stone-coated steel roofing

Stone-coated steel combines the durability of a metal roof with the aesthetic of traditional shingles, shake, or tile. The steel substrate is coated with a layer of stone granules embedded in an acrylic binder, producing a textured, color-rich appearance that doesn't read as 'metal' from the curb. RoofX installs stone-coated steel in shake, shingle, and tile profiles across Tampa Bay and Greater Orlando, particularly on homes where HOA covenants restrict the look of standing seam.

Lifespan on stone-coated steel is typically 40 to 50 years. Wind ratings up to 120 to 150 mph. The system is heavier than asphalt but lighter than tile, making it a strong choice for homes that were originally tile and are being converted to a longer-lasting system without structural reinforcement.

Galvanized metal roofing

Galvanized steel (G90) is the most common steel substrate for metal roofing systems. The steel is hot-dip coated with zinc to prevent corrosion, then painted with a Kynar 500 or similar high-performance finish for color and UV protection. Galvanized steel is the workhorse choice for inland Tampa Bay and Greater Orlando properties where coastal salt corrosion isn't a primary concern. For coastal homes, we typically recommend aluminum or Galvalume (zinc-aluminum alloy coating) over plain galvanized steel.

From beginning to end, service was top notch. Graham Keith came out to provide a quote for our roof. His customer service is top tier. He was always available and maintained contact with me regarding financing and progress.
