Architectural vs 3-tab shingles in Florida
For Tampa Bay and Greater Orlando homeowners, the choice between architectural and 3-tab asphalt shingles is largely settled in favor of architectural. Architectural shingles (also called dimensional or laminated shingles) carry 30 to 50 year manufacturer warranties, hold higher wind ratings (typically 130mph standard, 150mph available), and visually mimic shake or slate at a fraction of the cost. They're the dominant choice on virtually every new Florida residential install we do.
3-tab shingles are still available and still occasionally specified for budget rentals, low-pitch porches, or homes where the owner is genuinely cost-constrained and willing to accept the trade-offs. 3-tab carries shorter warranties (20 to 25 years), lower wind ratings, and a flat appearance that's gone out of fashion across most of the Florida market. The cost savings on 3-tab versus architectural is typically 15 to 20 percent, and the lifespan delta is often 5 to 10 years, so the math rarely supports 3-tab unless the home is being prepared for sale within 3 to 5 years.
RoofX installs both, with full disclosure of the trade-offs upfront. If you're choosing between them, expect us to recommend architectural in almost every situation.
