Roof Problems to Watch for this Winter

Icicles may seem harmless, but they result from the same rooftop conditions as ice dams and can be just as destructive.

In places where winter regularly brings snow and ice, roof problems are expected during the winter months. But if a homeowner keeps their eyes open and catches them early, a home will be better protected against the elements.

When winter weather is especially severe, many different things can go wrong with a roof. If a homeowner notices any of the following roof problems, contact a professional roofer right away.

Ice Dams

Ice dams are among the most damaging roof problems for areas that experience snow and ice.

An ice dam results from the heat collecting in the attic space, which warms the underside of the roof deck and melts the snow. The water runs down the roof and refreezes at the edge along the gutters. Ice dams can cause the gutters to give way and create moisture damage inside and outside the home.

Icicles

Icicles may seem harmless, but they result from the same rooftop conditions as ice dams and can be just as destructive.

When large numbers of icicles form in one area, the culprit is usually poor attic insulation in that spot. Not only can icicles destroy gutters, but they can also cause injury to people below if they suddenly break loose.

Condensation

The cold can also create roof problems that affect the inside of the home.

Condensation can occur due to poor attic ventilation. When the heat inside a home rises to the attic, it can become trapped if the roof doesn’t have enough vents. The moisture in the air condenses on the walls and underneath the roof deck. Over time, condensation can lead to mold, mildew, and rotting in the attic and roofing materials.

Heavy Snow

Heavy snowfall can cause roof problems. Though roofing systems are designed to withstand snow loads, the weight of a large amount of snow can create roof damage. In some cases, snowfall can induce or contribute to rooftop collapse.

Tree Limbs

Many homes have large trees with branches that hang over the rooftop. Diseased or stressed limbs can cause serious roof problems. When branches become burdened with ice and snow, they are more likely to break off and fall. Fallen tree limbs can weaken, crack or break away roofing materials. In addition, branches can trap snow or water on the rooftop, leading to further roof damage.

For any roofing concerns, it’s best to contact a reliable roofing contractor for assistance in determining how to proceed.
