Choosing Between Asphalt and Metal Roofs

Asphalt shingles have long been the go-to roofing solution.

Choosing the right roofing for a building is dependent on many factors. Environment, cost, style, and installation should all be considered when making such a long-term investment. The two most popular roofing options in the U.S. are asphalt shingles and metal roofing.

Here are the pros and cons of both types of roofing:

Asphalt roofing

Asphalt shingles have long been the go-to roofing solution. The organic or fiberglass base material is coated with asphalt and bound together in rolls or stacks. The asphalt is waterproofing, and a top coating of granules, usually mineral or ceramic, protects from UV radiation. Some shingles consist of materials like copper, clay, or plastic.

Shingles come in three main categories: three-tab, architectural, and luxury.

Metal roofing

Metal roofing has existed for years, and its design and durability have greatly improved. Far from simple sheets of corrugated iron and tin, newer metal roofing options consist of steel, aluminum, and copper. Metal sheets are laid out on a roof and interlocked by corrugation or fastened in place by seams. Some options are stone-coated for even greater durability.

Costs and maintenance

Upfront, asphalt roofing is the cheaper option. Installing shingles has always been a popular choice due to its low cost. That said, it also requires more frequent maintenance. Shingles can develop mold and algae in areas of high humidity, while hotter climates can damage their integrity.

On the other hand, metal roofing requires less maintenance and will last. A high-quality, well-installed metal roof has a life expectancy of anywhere from 60 to 100 years. However, some metals may be subject to corrosion and will still need occasional inspections.

Style

Fashion will always play some role in an owner's roofing choice. While metal roofing struggled to shed its 'industrial' image for years, it's becoming an increasingly popular choice for U.S. homeowners. The Dodge report shows that the residential share of metal roofing has risen from 12% to 17% in three years.

Metal roofing has become just as, if not more, fashionable than asphalt shingles. Sometimes, the design can make the difference between the two types hard to spot.

Energy efficiency

Roofing gets exposed to heat and the elements, leading to heat buildup and poor roof ventilation. Metal proves much more energy efficient in this regard. The reflectivity bounces heat back while shingles absorb it. Metal's thermal emittance and emissivity means it can absorb and release heat within the environment.

Since asphalt is installed directly onto the wooden beams, the trapped heat often has no space to escape. However, the batten roofs of metal paneling provide a gap between the roof and ceiling for cooler air to circulate.

Metal roofs are recyclable and more environmentally friendly than the fiberglass and asphalt shingles that often end up in landfills.

Expert roof installation

Shingles are also popular due to their easy installation. Easy to unroll and place, anyone can install them. However, using a professional roofer is advised for safety and best results.

Metal is much more expensive to install as it requires knowledge and expertise to assemble. The process is more time and labor-intensive, but the right contractor can provide great results in the long term.
